Boy George guilty of false imprisonment
Dec. 5, 2008, 7:40 AM EST
LONDON (AP) -- A jury convicted pop singer Boy George Friday of falsely imprisoning a male escort.
Norwegian Audun Carlsen had alleged he was restrained with handcuffs by the musician at the singer's
London apartment on April 28, 2007.
Carlsen, 29, also accused the former Culture Club frontman of swinging a metal chain at him as he fled the singer's flat after a naked photo shoot.
Boy George, who was tried under his real name George O'Dowd, admitted he handcuffed Carlsen while he investigated alleged tampering with his home computer. The singer said he believed Carlsen had removed photos of himself that were taken by the singer when the two met previously.
Jurors saw photos of welts on Carlsen's head and injuries to his arm, which he said had been inflicted by O'Dowd, 46. O'Dowd said he couldn't account for the injuries.
The '80s icon was released on bail following the verdict. He is due to be sentenced Jan. 16.
Judge David Radford indicated jail was a real possibility for the singer. "This is a case where custody is the more likely option," Radford said.
It's not the singer's first brush with the law. Two years ago, he was ordered to do community service in New York — sweeping streets— after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a burglary at his lower Manhattan apartment. The officers who responded found cocaine instead.

Boy George 'chained male escort to a wall in his flat'
By Emily Dugan
Published: 14 November 2007
The singer and DJ Boy George has been charged with false imprisonment after allegedly chaining a male escort to a wall in his flat as a sex slave.
The 47-year-old former Culture Club frontman, real name George O'Dowd, was released on bail yesterday and ordered to attend Thames magistrates' court on Thursday of next week.
Auden Carlsen, a 28-year-old Norwegian escort, claims he was grabbed and chained up by George and another man after the singer invited him back to his home in Shoreditch, east London, to pose for photographs in April.
According to newspaper reports following George's arrest at the time, the Eighties pop icon allegedly produced whips and sex toys and told Mr Karlsen: "Now you'll get what you deserve." The escort claimed he escaped after wrenching a hook out of the wall.
In a statement yesterday, Scotland Yard said: "George O'Dowd, 47, a musician of Ravey Street, EC2, is charged with the false imprisonment of a 28-year-old in Ravey Street on 28 April. He has been bailed to return before Thames Magistrates Court on 22 November."
George, who became a global star with Culture Club thanks to a series of hit singles including Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?, has had brushes with the law in the past. Last month, he was sued for loss of earnings by a nightclub owner after failing to show up for a performance in Warrington, Cheshire. George was told by a court to pay £31,000 compensation.
Last year, the singer was sentenced to community service and ordered to sweep the streets of New York City after he admitted wasting police time by falsely reporting a burglary at his Manhattan apartment. Officers who responded to the call found cocaine there.
The singer's well documented drug use had begun to spiral out of control at the height of his fame.
In 1986, he and his bandmates were arrested for possessing heroin following a police raid called "Operation Culture".
George had less chart success after Culture Club split up in 1986, but did score a No 1 solo hit with a cover version of Ken Boothe's reggae song, Everything I Own.
In recent years, he has reinvented himself as a club DJ and fashion designer. His clothing label, B-Rude, has featured in several international shows but has largely met with scepticism from critics. The singer also wrote an autobiographical musical called Taboo.

Boy George escapes jail as drug charge is dropped
Mark Brown
Thursday March 9, 2006
If you believed some of the stories, Boy George was facing years in jail after bags of cocaine were found in his Manhattan flat. Yesterday, the singer, DJ and now fashion designer walked from court with a fine and community service order after the drugs charge was dropped and he admitted wasting police time.
A charge of possessing cocaine was struck out after a plea bargain at Manhattan criminal court. Instead, he was fined $1,000 (£571) plus costs, ordered to attend a drug treatment programme and made to do five days' community service.
Boy George's woes began last October when, in the middle of the night, he rang 911 claiming his apartment had been burgled. What police allegedly found was a worse for wear Boy George with 13 plastic bags of cocaine in the flat.
Since then he has been tabloid fodder, a "shamed" figure facing ruin and jail. Much has been written that under the makeup lies a "bloated" and "bald" man.
Yesterday his lawyer, Lou Freeman, said his client had been nervous but had not expected to go to jail. "He's very relieved. I fully expect that he will be able to come back to the US when he wishes."
Boy George appeared in court under his real name, George O'Dowd. He issued a written statement thanking the judge, the district attorney and his lawyer "for the fair and speedy way it was dealt with".
Jeremy Pearce, his manager, said of the talk of prison: "We never thought it was going to happen. This is a good result."
Mr Pearce said Boy George, 44, had now given up his apartment in New York.
He added that he would continue his career as a DJ and was working on a new solo album on which he would sing.

Boy George's clothes with attitude steal the show
Alice O'Keeffe
Sunday February 19, 2006
The Observer
Boy George's clothing label B-Rude closed London Fashion Week last night with a show the singer described as 'boys in clothes you wish they'd wear'.
Small, figure-hugging pants were the order of the day, accompanied by overcoats, spangled jackets and deerstalker hats. Women's wear was similarly mischievous with one miniskirt finishing above the model's hips. One model dropped his trousers at the end of the catwalk. A gold handbag shaped like a grenade elicited a standing ovation. 'B-Rude is inspired by the rude boys in the Seventies,' said Boy George after the show. 'It's not about being rude to your mother. I'm just expressing myself with my clothes. I'm a romantic really.'
Earlier, a show by Central St Martin's students revealed what could be the look of 2006: office chic. Gone are last year's gypsy skirts and boho styles. Tailored suits, pencil skirts and cropped trousers dominated. An exception was Christopher Kane, whose lace mini dresses and corsets, brightly coloured and festooned with chains and gold hoops, won him the Harrods award for innovation. Kane sold three dresses to Kylie Minogue after his first student show last year and is being courted by Versace.
For classic label Jean Muir, Miss Moneypenny never went out of fashion. It celebrated its 40th year by reprising classics from the Seventies, Eighties and Nineties, including those omnipresent tailored jackets and sharply fitting shorts.

Boy George: I'm innocent
New York - The pop singer Boy George appeared briefly in criminal court in Manhattan on Wednesday to answer charges related to his October drug possession arrest.
Following a brief meeting at the bench between the singer's lawyer, Lewis Freeman, and prosecutor Craig Ortner, Manhattan criminal court Judge Anthony Ferrara postponed the case to March 8.
Boy George, whose birth name is George O'Dowd, wore a long black wool coat, black slacks, a black shirt and gray sneakers with white stripes, and sported a buzz-cut hairstyle and a large blue Star of David tattoo across his forehead.
He said nothing during the court appearance. As he was being hustled out of the courthouse by bodyguards, he answered "yes" when a reporter asked if he still maintained his innocence.
Boy George denies drug claims
O'Dowd was arrested at his New York apartment on October 7 after he called 911 to report a burglary.
Police who went to check out the call charged O'Dowd after finding a small amount of cocaine next to a computer. O'Dowd has been free on bail pending a trial after being charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, allegedly more than 3.5g of cocaine.
O'Dowd and his lawyer say the drugs found in his apartment were not his.
O'Dowd has had drug problems before. In 1986, he was convicted for heroin possession in England. Two of his friends overdosed in the incident that got him arrested and O'Dowd was forced into a rehabilitation programme.
The conviction reportedly led to the disintegration of Culture Club a year later.
O'Dowd is famous for his androgynous persona and Culture Club hits, including Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.
Boy George to fight drug charges
02.02.06
NEW YORK - Singer Boy George is innocent and will fight the drug possession charges he faces in New York, which could result in 15 years in prison if he is convicted, his lawyer said yesterday.
George, wearing a full-length coat, appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday to answer charges stemming from an October incident when police, responding to his call to report a burglary, found 13 bags of cocaine in his apartment.
The case was adjourned until March 8 after the singer's lawyer, Lou Freeman, asked for more time to prepare his case. No plea was entered during the brief hearing.
"In the strongest possible terms, George maintains his innocence," Freeman told Reuters after the hearing. "He's going to fight them all the way."
George left the court without talking with reporters, stopping briefly to hug two female fans who waited outside the courthouse to show support.
George, who made his name in the 1980s as front man for the pop band Culture Club, was arrested on October 7 when police, responding to his call to report a burglary, recovered 13 plastic bags containing cocaine, according to the complaint filed by the Manhattan district attorney.
The singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd, is also charged with filing a false report with police.
Freeman said the singer does not know where the drugs came from or who owned them, and that he is a very social person who has many visitors to his home.
The felony complaint charges the singer with one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance and says the substances found weighed more than one-eighth of an ounce (3.5 grams).
George's musical "Taboo" closed in New York in 2004 after losing money. The musical was an autobiographical look at a time when flamboyant cross-dressers reigned in London clubs and Culture Club topped pop charts around the world.
The son of an Irish builder, George rose from supermarket shelf stocker to glitzy pop millionaire.
He became an international star in 1982 with "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" The song topped the charts in 18 countries and Culture Club went on to sell almost 20 million albums.
In 1995, George recounted his drug-induced fall from grace and how he had finally kicked his heroin habit in his autobiography "Take It Like A Man." Later, he made a new career as a disc jockey and record producer.
Freeman said George is now working on developing his own line of clothing.

Boy George arrested on drugs charges
AP
Published: 08 October 2005
Boy George was arrested on drugs charges early today, nearly 24 hours after calling the police emergency line to report a burglary in his Manhattan apartment.
The singer, whose real name is George O'Dowd, claimed his home had been burgled at about 3am on Friday, said Detective Kevin Czartoryski, a New York Police spokesman.
Officers arrived at O'Dowd's apartment and discovered a small amount of cocaine next to a computer, police said. Police were continuing to investigate.
The singer was released without bail after being charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, allegedly more than an eighth of an ounce (five grams) of cocaine, said Barbara Thompson, a spokeswoman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The charge carries a maximum penalty of five to 15 years in prison.
Calls to the office of O'Dowd's lawyer went unanswered early today.
It is not the first time that Boy George has had problems with drugs.
In 1986 he was convicted for heroin possession in England. Two of his friends overdosed in the incident and O'Dowd was forced into a rehabilitation program. The conviction led to the disintegration of his group, Culture Club, one year later.
Boy George, famous for his androgynous persona, and Culture Club, had hits including Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me.

Boy George: not guilty after cocaine arrest says former agent
The date: 10th October 2005
Boy George's former agent Tony Denton has defended the recently arrested star, saying that the ex-singer turned DJ had nothing to do with the cocaine found at his New York apartment.
Denton said: "Basically, he did call the police himself. He actually thought somebody was breaking into the apartment. They turned up and they searched the apartment and found traces of cocaine on the computer table, which George has said he was not taking and was nothing to do with him."
Boy George landed in Britain on Saturday night following his charge with possessing drugs. He's also been charged with making a false report, as there was no evidence of an attempted break in at his apartment. Should he be found guilty, the one-time Culture Club star faces 15 years in jail.
Denton continued: "I am told, as far as I know from his sister, there was definitely nothing else in that apartment. At the end of the day, if there had been anything more than that police would have taken his passport. At the moment, he can go in and out [of the US] as he feels."
Boy George is due in court on December 19th.
Early signs of a naughty Boy?
Even before his cocaine bust last week, Boy George was taking the Fifth.
During an interview with Howard Stern regular Chaunce Hayden, the '80s pop sensation refused to answer questions about whether he uses drugs.
When the Steppin' Out editor asked whether he was "100% sober these days," Boy George, aka George O'Dowd, replied: "If I wasn't clean and sober, why do you think I would tell you?" The singer laughed, and added, "I'm not trying to be funny, but why do you think I would tell you that? It's not like I ever announced that I was clean and sober in the first place. I'm just sick of talking about it. It's absolutely nobody's business as to what I do and don't do. Okay? What I do in my personal life is my own business. Period."
New York cops arrested the Brit-born deejay after he reported a burglary Friday about 3 a.m. Instead of finding evidence of a break-in, officers found cocaine on a table and arrested him. He spent the night in a Manhattan Criminal Court holding cell and was released the next day.
He's since returned to the U.K., but when he comes back to New York for his Dec. 19 hearing — he moved to the city he says he loves in 2003 while starring in "Taboo" on Broadway — he faces 15 years in a U.S. jail.
The performer's lawyer, Lou Freeman, wouldn't comment yesterday, but outside court he said, "It was a small amount of drugs. He doesn't know where it came from. He had a lot of people in his house. A man who has something to hide does not call police."

New York/London/Canada: Jan 8 2005
In a unique turn of events, fans of 80's pop icon Boy George have taken it upon themselves to organize a worldwide campaign to help raise money for relief efforts following the disasters in South East Asia.
The idea came about via an online fan forum on the UK based website 100% Boy (www.boygeorgeuk.com). Fans there held an open discussion on what they could do to help, and within days it was decided that they would put out a call worldwide to Boy George fans to part with one or more collectible items from the singer's career and auction them off online to help raise awareness of the cause and, more importantly, much needed monies.
Over the past 20 years, celebrity involved charities have become almost a daily event. What makes this effort so unique and grassroots is that it is being done by the fans and followers of the celebrity. 100% Boy's forum boasts over 500 fans from all around the world, and they are also asking for the involvement of other Boy George-related websites, groups and fan-forums.
Organizers are also hoping to get Boy George and members of Culture Club involved in the endeavour. The Boy, real name George O'Dowd, currently resides in America and is enjoying a career as a renowned DJ and clothing designer.
Auctions will be available on eBay starting February 14th.
